Next, the sonographer squirts gel on the patient’s abdomen. The gel allows for better contact between the skin and the probe. The specialist then passes a handheld probe over the tummy to examine the baby. The probe transmits an image of the baby on an ultrasound screen.

Often, the room is darkened so that the image on the screen appears clearer. For the same reason, the sonographer may change the angle of the screen. Sometimes they face it directly and at other times from the side to get a better view. The scan is completely safe for the baby and the mother. That said, it may feel a bit uncomfortable to the mother if the sonographer has to apply pressure to get the best image of the baby’s body.

What To Do Before An Anomaly Scan?

To help get the best view of the baby, the mother may be asked to drink a lot of water before the appointment. A full bladder helps during the ultrasound, particularly if the baby is in an awkward position. In some rare cases, the baby moves around a lot. This can make the scan harder, but there is nothing to worry about. In about 30 minutes, the anomaly scan will be completed, and you’ll get the results immediately.
