Anomaly Scan Centre In Chennai Explains The Process Of The 20-Week Scan

Understanding The 20-Week Or Anomaly Scan

It is around the 20th week that the realisation begins to sink in – you are going to be a mom. It is a heady feeling to nurture a little one, but your job is just getting started. It is this week that is one of the most important for you and your baby. It’s when you can get the 20-week scan done.

A well-known anomaly scan centre in Chennai says that the mid-pregnancy scan takes a closer look at the baby. The ultrasound, which can be done between 18 to 21 weeks of the gestation, helps look for any significant physical abnormalities or development issues in the baby.

The test creates a 2D, black and white image of the baby inside the womb. Typically, the picture shows a side view of the baby where you can see their face and hands. During the ultrasound, the sonographer will look for issues in the kidneys, face, bones, brain, heart, abdomen and the spinal cord of the baby. The healthcare specialist also checks for 11 very rare conditions. That said, most scans have normal results.

How Is The Anomaly Scan Conducted?

A sonographer or a trained doctor conducts the 20-week scan. The patient is asked to lie down on a table or a couch. The clothes are adjusted so that the abdomen is completely uncovered for the test. Tissue is tucked around the edges of your pants and tops to protect them from the ultrasound gel.

Next, the sonographer squirts gel on the patient’s abdomen. The gel allows for better contact between the skin and the probe. The specialist then passes a handheld probe over the tummy to examine the baby. The probe transmits an image of the baby on an ultrasound screen.

Often, the room is darkened so that the image on the screen appears clearer. For the same reason, the sonographer may change the angle of the screen. Sometimes they face it directly and at other times from the side to get a better view. The scan is completely safe for the baby and the mother. That said, it may feel a bit uncomfortable to the mother if the sonographer has to apply pressure to get the best image of the baby’s body.

What To Do Before An Anomaly Scan?

To help get the best view of the baby, the mother may be asked to drink a lot of water before the appointment. A full bladder helps during the ultrasound, particularly if the baby is in an awkward position. In some rare cases, the baby moves around a lot. This can make the scan harder, but there is nothing to worry about. In about 30 minutes, the anomaly scan will be completed, and you’ll get the results immediately.
